Bio-Ken Snake Farm

Bio-ken is a local research centre which deals in reptiles especially snakes and snake bites. Located less than five minutes drive from Hemingways this makes an interesting and educational visit as well making an important contribution to this important local service. Hemingways staff can arrange this really informative and enjoyable visit even for those who are a little on the worried side...

Bio-Ken was founded by the late James Ashe and his wife Sandra in 1980. Bio-Ken milks snakes for medical research and for the preparation of anti-venom to treat victims of poisonous snake bites.

With the help of the James Ashe Anti-venom Trust they also provide free treatment to those who cannot afford it. There are 127 different snake species in Kenya and Bio-ken are promoting education, recognition of snakes as well as important snake-bite seminars for local people. Bio-Ken have a snake removal service for the local population.

The Saving Snakes program ensures that the offending reptiles are either housed at the Snake farm for study or released back into the wild in a more suitable place.

The staff at the snake farm are friendly, knowledgeable and professional helping you to recognise both the beauty and the danger at close quarters. The guided tour takes around 40 minutes.
