Did you know there have been 1070 species of birds reliably recorded in Kenya?.
In Africa, only The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has more species, but due to the inaccessibility of sites and the unstable political situation in the DRC, Kenya is undoubtedly the best place to visit for a bird watching holiday.
Our country is unique in that it is a comparatively small country with many habitats, and one can easily visit mountains, highlands and lowland forests, freshwater and alkaline lakes, grasslands, bush country and deserts.
Visiting birders especially want to see bird families, which are endemic to Africa (only found in Africa); these include Ostrich, Secretary Bird, Hammerkop, Guineafowl, Tree-hoopoes and Mousebirds. Although several of these occur in other African countries all are easily seen in Kenya.
Others want to see spectacular concentration of birds e.g. Flamingos that may number up to 2 million at Lake Nakuru and Bogoria.
Even people who have never looked at a bird report in their lives are amazed at how many, bright and colourful birds there are in Kenya. And at Hemingways we are blessed with 2 excellent birding areas within a few miles of the hotel: Mida Creek, and the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, home to the tiny Sokoke Scops owl.
At Mida you may see African fish eagles, flamingos, yellow-billed storks, several species of ibises and many more.
